Scale is the ratio of a distance on a map. Scale shows helps you find the distance between two

points, A and B. The easiest way to understand a scale is writing it as a ratio and it will always be

written as 1:x. As an example we will use 1:1000. The one represents one centimetre and the

10000 represents 10000 centimetres.

To convert 10000 centimetres to meters is done by dividing 10000 by 100 that equals 100m. You

divide it by 100 because that is how many centimetres are needed to have 1 meter. Another

example is 1:100000. If we want to find it in meters then we divide it by 100 which is 1000 meters

and even further it is 1km.
